What you can ask

Anything that's on your mind.

The moments where a second opinion changes the outcome.

A manager 1:1

“How do I bring up my promotion without sounding entitled?”

An interview

“They asked for a 30-60-90 plan. What do they really want to see?”

A stakeholder meeting

“How do I get a skeptical director to back my roadmap?”

A big presentation

“I have ten minutes with the VP. What do I lead with?”

The one grinding your gears

“A peer keeps taking credit in meetings. How do I handle it without drama?”

Or anything else on your mind

If it’s keeping you up at night, it counts.

Hi Steph! I have my first 1:1 with my skip-level next week. She joined three months ago and I'm not sure she really knows what my team does yet.

I'd love to make a good first impression and start building a relationship with her, without it turning into me listing everything I've worked on. For context, I'm a senior PM on payments and I've been here about four years.

How should I open, and what should I bring?

Steph · WednesdayOur reply

Love that you're thinking about this now, not the night before. Here's how I'd play it:

1
Start with her agenda. Ask what she wants to change in her first year. Her answer tells you which of your wins will matter to her, and it makes this a conversation, not a pitch.
2
Bring one story, not a list. Pick the project that connects to what she cares about and tell it in three beats: the problem, the call you made, what changed. One clear story sticks better than ten updates.
3
Give her a reason to come back. Offer something useful, like a 15-minute walkthrough of where payments is headed. That turns a one-off meeting into a relationship.

Skip the status update; that's your manager's job. I've attached a one-page prep sheet with opening questions you can steal.
